The election results have us in a brief moment of assessment. Our nation just elected
a president who was endorsed by KKK groups and who demonstrated that he thinks of women as nothing more than sex objects to be assaulted for the pleasure of men. White Mississippians – both men and women – overwhelmingly voted in support of this. The party that opposed reauthorizing the Civil Rights Act and supports suppressing women’s access to reproductive health services now controls the US House and Senate and is poised to hold a majority on the Supreme Court. How can we move beyond this moment? Our sadness and despondency will not prevent us from continuing to work for the changes that women in Mississippi now need more than ever. Our agenda for women’s health, women’s increased earnings, women’s access to affordable child care, and protection from domestic violence and sexual assault are needed now more than ever.We will continue this important fight for women. We remain committed to working at the intersection of race and gender on behalf of all women – women who make up the majority of the poor in our state and nation, women who continue to work against race and gender inequities as they struggle to raise their children. Many who came before us faced dangerous and hostile adversity. Let us remember the spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer and in her honor and in the honor of many women who struggled before us, continue to fight for justice that we know women require.
Stand with us as we stand with you!
